Who am I?

Well simply put I'm me ;) Oh go on then, as you will have no doubt already gathered my name is Dave, known generally whilst surfing this information superhighway as dmr54.

I have absolutely no intention of writing some lengthy tome about myself on this page, as apart from anything else I can only think of a couple of things that would be more boring :)

Briefly I am (as some would say) a 'mad' southerner living in the North of England. Coming originally as I do from London I of course support Manchester United, the greatest football team in the world, and have a great fondness for prawn butties. I moved from the south in 1987, moving up to the Manchester area to be with my wife who was born and breed up here.

I have really only had two main professions during my working life, the first being in the travel industry and the second and present in the IT industry. I made the switch so that I could begin to earn some decent money for once, whilst the travel industry has a very glamorous image I can assure you the pay was bad, which is not something you need when you have a young family to provide for. So having decided to do a course in computing at the local sixth form college, l low and behold their IT Technician decided to leave shortly after I started on the course (bummer I hear you cry) and the job was advertised, the rest as they say was history.

What do I do for a living?

I am presently the IT Manager for a company called Brownsword, based in Denton, Manchester, who in turn are part of the Capita Group.

Brownsword is the market leader in the handling and investigation of motor and household insurance claims, and is the exclusive outsource provider for Digilog and it's Voice Risk Analysis service.

We are a predominantly Microsoft based company running Windows Server 2003 for a backend OS, Exchange, SQL and ISA at the application level and Windows XP within a full active directory setup for the desktops.

If you'd like to know a little more about my qualifications and skill set simply click here, and if you'd like to take a peek at my resume simply email me via this link and I'll tell you how to view my online version.

And before that?

Loot - The Free Ads Newspaper - Group IT Ops Manager

Ashton Sixth Form College - Network Systems Administrator

Travelpack Ltd - Viewdata and IT Support Supervisor

And one or two things before that which we really don't need to go in to ;)

Is there life outside of work?

Some would say yes and others no, I can usually be found online, which generally means I am also logged in to work, more because it is easier to do that with my laptop than mess around with the the proxy client set up. But that does not mean I do not have a life (honest).

Pocket PC's and SmartPhones - A major part of my life revolves around these devices, not only do I use them on a daily basis to help make my life more efficient but I also assist in the running of the UK's best and largest Windows Mobile website - 4WinMobile.com

The Grand Old Game of Golf - Why oh why do we keep attempting this game, on a good day it is the best thing ever on a bad day you could easily break each club in half! But I do enjoy it most of the time and now Jake has decided he also wants to take the sport up. We go each Sunday to the local driving range and Jake has a lesson with the pro there and I smack a 100 balls up the range, at least 10 of which usually go in a straight line.

Vacation Time - The whole point of working as far as I can see is so that you can afford to go out into the big wide world and see things. Our family basically lives for our vacation time, trying to get away between two and four times a year with mini breaks in this country to tide us over in between. At the moment our two favorite destinations are America and Turkey. Skiing used to be a big favorite for us but due to the kids we have only been on and off over the last few years this is something we plan on changing starting in 2007.

Computing and The Internet - Having been online now for over a decade I have to say the net is rather like a second home, more and more I find our lives assisted by it, from being able to find out information for things such as days out and the kids homework, to ordering items for Jo's cake business. As for computers themselves what can I say ... I'm an addict.

Holy Trinity School - This is my daughters school, until very recently I was the Chairman of the PTA and also a school governor, it was a great feeling knowing that I was doing my bit to improve the start in life that our children get. I did not do probably all that I could have due to my constant traveling though my previous job with Loot but none the less, I'm so glad I did it.
